Each May, students are given three days to present their bachelor’s or master’s projects. In addition, the festival features a diverse program across four locations, including talks by experts from the local creative industry and inspiring projects from all of our degree programs. This year’s theme, “Creativity against Dystopia,” aims to build bridges between tradition and modern technology. year asking people in Zurich to show me the contents of their pockets. The aim was to take a documentary look at everyday objects that we often overlook – things that are carried, used, forgotten, or found by chance. The photographic work is based on an ethnographic approach: through informal conversations, spontaneous encounters, and observation, a visual archive of urban everyday culture emerged. The camera served as a tool of research. The resulting images are not portraits in the classical sense, but instead tell stories of people through the objects they carry. The project positions itself as an exploration of how seemingly insignificant things can provide insight into social structures, personal histories, and cultural patterns. The Anthropocene marks the point in time at which humans begin to leave severe marks on the ecosystem and on our planet, influencing how we coexist, what materials we craft with, and what future generations will call our remains. These fossils can range from intangible traces to very specific objects. My contribution "Connection Lost &lt;/3" focuses on abandoned digital ports and how they became obsolete, questioning what the personal consequences of these lost connections can be. The digital age has produced a flood of images, making it harder to navigate an increasingly visual world. Yet awareness of how we understand and contextualize images is largely missing. Like the prisoners in Plato’s cave, we often perceive only the surface of messages without recognizing their true, sometimes highly manipulative nature. We tend to interpret images intuitively and emotionally, unaware of the manipulative mechanisms behind them. This opens the door to cognitive bias and subtle influence. The problem already begins with image creators, who—like the one-eyed among the blind—are often insufficiently trained in visual literacy themselves. They craft visual messages intuitively and artistically without fully understanding their persuasive effects. Without critical reflection on visual manipulation, democratic competence cannot develop within the public. A self-critical approach to one’s own visual competence can address this gap. Visual literacy includes both decoding images and expressing oneself visually, and—like vocabulary—it can be learned and improved. We as Designers at Salzburg University of Applied Sciences developed an interactive exhibition to make the limits of visual understanding tangible. What do we imagine when a part of an image is missing? How do we interpret censored images, and what can we learn from them? The exhibit poses these exact questions to the viewer and encourages reflection. Through examples, it provides clear visualisations, and a voting feature for the displayed images allows for personal assessment while simultaneously enhancing one's visual literacy.
